Washburn Hits the National Spotlight on WUper Bowl Sunday

This past Sunday Washburn University was featured in the national spotlight on a day that one would not expect them to be, Super Bowl Sunday. Reason being is that Washburn had two formal football players playing in the big game. Cary Williams who is actually the starting cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens, and Michael Wilhoite who just a few weeks before the Super Bowl became named the special teams captain for the San Francisco 49’ers.  This gained national attention due to the fact that Washburn has never had an alum play in the Super Bowl, and featured more players than some traditional powerhouses such as Notre Dame and the Oklahoma University. This type of story is something that not only brought national attention to Washburn, but the world wide leader in sports networks ESPN even did a feature on their flagship program SportsCenter where senior broadcaster Pedro Gomez interviewed head football Craig Schurig live on the field of Washburns Yager Stadium. Senior broadcaster Bob Levy also joined the feature from the studio and gave statistical information about the University and its sports programs. Needless to say this is the biggest showcase Washburn University has ever had on a national scale and will hopefully help the University with making itself more known for not only athletes who are in the recruiting process and are considering which College program to join, but also with any general student who is considering a University to attend.
